Nuclear Energy 101 And Why You Should Care About It

During his State of the Union address, President Obama called for a “new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country.”  Plans are currently underway to build the first new nuclear plant in this country in over twenty five years.  In Wisconsin, nuclear power has received some attention lately as the Clean Energy Jobs Act makes its way through the legislature.

We all know that our dependency on coal, gas and petroleum must be reduced.  We also know that two factors are essential in creating a sustainable energy policy: reliability and cost.  As a proven renewable energy source, nuclear power meets both of these requirements and should be given thoughtful and serious consideration by legislators intent on passing the Clean Energy Jobs Act.

So what is nuclear energy? Nuclear power plants use uranium (a natural element mined from the ground) as fuel.  Energy is created from the fuel through nuclear chain reactions which spearheads a process which creates electrons that is electricity.

What are the benefits of nuclear energy?  It is reliable, sustainable and clean.
