Do it for the Children

I just returned from our annual 'back to school' meeting where the kids get to start organizing their desks, visit with classmates they haven't seen all summer, and parents get to make plans for all the fun we'll have once they are back in school (just kidding). Finally, all the parents, staff, and children get together in church for a devotional and prayers for a productive school year and the principal tells us about important things to be aware of.

One of those important things made me more irate than I have been in a long time. Apparently the federal government has MANDATED every single menu option, the serving sizes, REQUIRED every child to have a fruit or vegetable on their tray and PROHIBIT giving out seconds for any reason in our school's hot lunch program. Oh, and here's another kicker... It's going to cost even more now because of this level of micro-management.

I remember when Congressman Ron Kind was spinning his support of this program and I remember wondering, “Just how stupid does he think we are?”

<begin sarcastic tone>Apparently Ron Kind and the federal government are much smarter than any of us who are raising our children. You see, the all knowing, all seeing, all powerful King Obama and Prince Ronald are much smarter than average, every day parents like me. They know the foods our kids like to eat and the right portions to serve them in. <end sarcastic tone>

So let me ask a few pointed questions that these wizards of smart may have neglected when they were being briefed by their egg head advisers who live in the bubble of Washington, D.C...

  1. What if my kids don't like the food that the federal government has MANDATED? Those nannies in D.C. completely ignore the fact that kids simply won't eat what they don't like. They will go hungry.
  2. What if my kids do like some of the foods that happen to be on the menu but don't like the others? Those nimrods in D.C. completely disregard the fact that children will eat only what they like and won't touch the rest so their MANDATED portion sizes won't be enough to give them the energy they need. They will go hungry.
  3. What about those big, brawny farm kids and student athletes who attend our school? They need a little extra energy to power their bodies through all the physical activities they participate in but the nannies in D.C. apparently don't care about them either. They will go hungry.

In the past, Democrats have tried to demonize conservative Republicans like me for wanting school children to go hungry. The truth is that we conservatives know that parents are the best judges about what and how much their children should eat and, MORE IMPORTANTLY, there is no authority in the United States Constitution giving the federal government this much power over our day-to-day lives. It is one of the most bone-headed ideas to think that there is a simple, one size fits all, solution to our children's nutritional needs.

I am outraged. Restricting portion sizes, forcing kids to take food they won't even eat, and prohibiting them from having seconds if they are still hungry makes the Democrats the ones who are truly trying to make our kids go hungry while soaking taxpayers with the bill for all the waste that will occur in the process. If you weren't going to vote Republican this November then I urge you to reconsider and do it for the children. They are going to go hungry because of the crap that King Obama, Prince Ronald, and the other court jesters in the Democrat Party are shoveling onto their plates. Do it for the parents who really do know their children better than any pinhead in Washington ever will. Do it for yourselves because this is just one more  freedom that is slowly but surely being taken away from us and your lifestyle may be the next one they try to force regulations on.
