Suspension of Politics for a Moment
It was only a couple of years ago that my father-in-law passed away as a result of Alzheimer's disease. Unless you have lived through it too, it's hard to fathom the emotional stress that comes with the experience. The good folks at Alzheimer's Association were a tremendous help to my wife and her sisters in understanding and coping with it during a very difficult time in our lives.
I'm participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's as a way to say thanks to this organization and to honor the memory of a great man, Roger Protz. Roger was a wonderful man and very inventive. He came up with ideas for gadgets or enhancements to gadgets that still boggle my mind. That's why it was so difficult when Alzheimer's disease robbed him of his brilliance and even his ability to speak. The disease deteriorated his brain so much that he could not speak a word for the last couple of years of his life.
For those of you who never had the pleasure of meeting Roger, I hope that the following tribute will help you get to know the kind of man he was.
I pray that raising awareness and supporting this organization will lead to another family being helped in the same kind of compassionate and loving manner that they helped our family. Just having someone to talk to who understands what is going on in such a chaotic, unknown situation helped tremendously.
