Is it ok to be wrong?
This is a serious question meant for serious times such as these. When I ask my conservative friends this question they often respond with something like, 'Sure. I've made several mistakes in life and in business and I learned something valuable from every one of them.'
Unfortunately my liberal friends see things differently. Their ideology demands perfection. After all, they insist on telling everyone else what to eat, which doctor they can see, which natural resources they can use, what cars to drive, what cereal to buy, which condiments they can and can't use, which school subjects they can teach, which schools they can even attend, and many other things... If they're going to tell all of us how to live our lives then they have to make perfect decisions or face the possibility of losing credibility. If they are ever wrong then people will lose faith in their ability to make decisions on their behalf so they do NOT have the luxury of being wrong... Ever. That is why liberals get so defensive when conservatives point out just how wrong they are.
Here's another story to help explain the liberal mindset. When my sister was in college she took a course that studied the communist manifesto. In our discussion about this she said something like, 'Communism could work if the right people were in charge.' Of course my reply was, 'The only way Communism can work is if God were in charge because there are no perfect people who will make perfect decisions about how all the rest of us must live our lives.'
We conservatives believe that we are helping our liberal friends to learn from their mistakes when we present them with facts and try to help them understand the truth. I could tell my sister a million times over that there is no such thing as 'the right people' and that only God is perfect but she may never believe me. The problem is that liberals worship the government and the programs that come from it are like sacramental blessings showered upon them. When we tell them that they are wrong and those government programs should be discontinued we are, essentially, telling them that they are worshiping a false god. I'm serious. This is the mindset that they have been led to after decades of propaganda and indoctrination.
Which brings me to the solution... Pray.
Pray for the patience that is necessary to speak the truth with love to your liberal friends who have been led astray. Remember that they are the victims of a cruel, tyrannical ideology. They have been lied to. They have been led to believe that by simply voting for tyrants then they can shed all personal responsibility and live off the productivity of others forever. They have been robbed of faith by believing that government is the answer to all of their problems instead of looking to God for guidance through life's ups and downs. They have made mistakes by voting for the wrong people just like many of us but they can learn from those mistakes and make a better decision about the future of America in November.

Perfect people for communism
As I read this, I was reminded of the quote by Jefferson, "Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question."
And Madison in the same vein: " “If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.”
Madison further talked about government being the ultimate manifestation of human nature, and again, emphasized the needs to control that human nature with checks and balances. The left of today would give all power to government, and HOPE that an angel could be found to administer it. Good luck with that.
What you have done here, Chris, is to write an abridged version of my favorite book of all time, "the Law" by Frederic Bastiat (see www.bastiat.org for free online version.) It takes each specious argument of the socialists/interventionists and knocks them down. It remains, after 164 years, the best short book on economics, ethics and politics. I recommend it highly.
