Earlier this week, the Wisconsin Senate passed my bipartisan bill that will help ensure our state remains a national leader in the production of potatoes.

With last year’s total acreage valued at $320 million, potatoes are one of the most lucrative cash crops we grow here in our state. In fact, Wisconsin is the third-largest potato producer in the country and a top five state in generating seed potatoes.

Most of us can name the three branches of government, although some recent news indicates a significant number of people living in the United States cannot. This is documented in a September 2022 article published by the University of Pennsylvania titled “Americans’ Civics Knowledge Drops on First Amendment and Branches of Government”. An August 2024 article published by the Harvard University titled “Your kid can’t name three branches of government? He’s not alone” further documents this basic and systemic ignorance about our American way of government.

On Tuesday, April 22 the Senate was in session. While we were on the floor, we passed Senate Bill (SB) 23. SB 23, which I am proud to cosponsor, extends Medical Assistance benefits to new mothers for up to one year postpartum. Under current state law, new mothers on Medicaid are only covered for two months after giving birth. But pregnancy related health challenges do not go away after eight weeks. This bipartisan legislation will extend healthcare to thousands of new mothers across Wisconsin and support new families when they need it most.

The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday for the case Mahmoud v. Taylor. The suit was brought against a Maryland school board for teaching pro-LGBTQ curriculum without parental consent or the ability to opt-out. The plaintiffs argued that this practice violated the Free Exercise Clause in the First Amendment citing a previous decision, Wisconsin v. Yoder. The Supreme Court’s decision in this case will set an important precedent for the future of parental rights across the country.

This Sunday is Easter! As we reflect on the cross of Christ this week, let us never forget God’s love demonstrated to us through the sacrifice of His Son. Easter week is the perfect time to deepen our appreciation for God’s grace as we remember Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. Isaiah 53:5 declares, “but he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
