Americans deserve elections that they can trust
Americans deserve elections that they can trust. After all, confidence in our voting system is the backbone of our Republic, yet today that confidence is at an all-time low.
Last year, I explained how our election system does not require proof of U.S. citizenship when individuals register to vote. Individuals simply check a box saying they are a citizen, and somehow that’s considered “good enough” to vote.
This is why states from Ohio to Virginia to Texas have discovered non-citizens on their voter rolls, with some even casting ballots.
And in states like California, Illinois, and Minnesota, voters aren’t even required to show ID at the polls. You can view a map of states that do not require photo ID to vote here.
This opens the door to fraud and dilutes the voice of every legal voter. We should all agree that the integrity of our elections should be better than “good enough.”
Wisconsinites have seen these vulnerabilities and demanded change. In 2025, 63% of voters supported requiring voter ID. In 2024, 70% voted to ensure non-citizens do not vote in our elections. These are overwhelming majorities that cut across party lines, and they emphasize that the people of our state want elections that are secure, transparent, and honest.
But Wisconsin Democrats continue to stand in the way. They have blocked audits of our voter rolls, even as concerns grow about outdated data. Attorney General Josh Kaul went so far as to sue in order to overturn a Waukesha judge’s decision requiring the Wisconsin Elections Commission to check for non-citizens on our rolls.
If you’re afraid of transparency, it usually means you’re trying to hide something. It also shows why Congress must finally deliver serious election reforms.
That is why I voted for the SAVE Act to require proof of citizenship when individuals register to vote, and it’s also why this week I cosponsored Congressman Bryan Steil’s (WI-01) Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act.
The MEGA Act is a common-sense election reform bill that requires voter ID, verifies citizenship during registration, and ensures states maintain accurate voter rolls.
It also requires mail ballots to arrive by the close of polls on Election Day, makes sure states use auditable paper ballots rather than electronic slips, and bans ballot harvesting, where political operatives can pick up any voter’s absentee or mail-in ballot for any reason and deliver it to the polling location completely unchecked.
Every American must show documentation to fly, to obtain a hunting or fishing license, and heck, even to buy a beer. Our elections should be no different. You can read more about the MEGA Act here.
One illegal vote cancels out one lawful vote, and these reforms will restore trust, strengthen confidence, and give Americans peace of mind that our elections are honest.
