My Appearance on "UpFront"
I joined WISN's UpFront program on Sunday to provide more insight on the budget negotiations.
In case you missed it: Over the course of the last few weeks, Senate and Assembly Republicans have engaged with Governor Evers and his staff in negotiations with the goal of reaching bipartisan agreement in major areas of the state budget. In the budget crafted two years ago, Governor Evers vetoed our tax cut and kept all the spending. Our hope this time would be that via negotiation, middle class tax relief would avoid a veto.
Both sides met in good faith, but unfortunately last week, Republicans realized we were too far apart to strike a deal. Governor Evers insisted on even more spending than we could afford and Republicans were not comfortable with the Governor's large spending requests for the UW System and child care, without receiving meaningful reforms in return.
We remain open to continuing negotiations with Governor Evers. But we will now engage in our long-established practice of crafting a state budget that contains meaningful tax relief and responsible spending levels with the goal of finishing on time.
