Ensuring Students Have the Right to Free Speech on Campus

Free speech is a foundation of our democracy and AB 501 affirms first amendment rights on college campuses across Wisconsin. College campuses should be the place where students engage in the robust debate of ideas, speak freely and form their own opinions.

Sadly, students are becoming increasingly concerned to express their political beliefs. We’ve also seen tensions at our universities over free speech reach a tipping point. Just this fall, Charlie Kirk was assassinated on a college campus for discussing his viewpoints. We need legislation now more than ever to protect free speech, promote healthy, respectful debate and encourage intellectual diversity.
