Politics at its Worst
Earlier this week, legislative leaders and the Governor reached a bipartisan agreement focused on two priorities I consistently hear about from constituents: affordability and supporting strong schools.
Unfortunately, that agreement failed to pass the State Senate by a vote of 15-18. Despite the support from the Governor, every Senate Democrat voted against the deal.
I am disappointed by the outcome because this legislation would have delivered meaningful relief to Wisconsin families at a time when rising costs continue to strain household budgets. The proposal included more than $1 billion in tax relief, including lower property taxes through increased school aids and the elimination of state income taxes on overtime pay and tips. It also included direct rebates for taxpayers. Under the proposal, individuals who filed a Wisconsin tax return in 2024 would have received $300, while married couples filing jointly would have received $600. At a time when affordability is top of mind for families across the state, this was an opportunity to return taxpayer dollars directly to the people who paid them.
Another important issue I hear about from constituents is the need to increase funding for school districts. I am a strong supporter of our local schools. Building on our investment of more than $550 million of new money in the bipartisan state budget for special education, this agreement would have provided an additional $315 million to schools. By increasing the special education reimbursement rate to 50 percent of costs, the highest ever, schools in my district would have received nearly $8 million more each year. Superintendents I spoke with expressed nearly unanimous support for this legislation. This proposal would have given breathing room in school district budgets that have been stretched thin by declining enrollment.
This was not a perfect bill. Compromises rarely are. But I supported this legislation because I recognize the reality of divided government. It was an opportunity to deliver real results for Wisconsin families, taxpayers, and schools in a bipartisan manner and provide relief right NOW.
It is unfortunate that political calculations on both sides outweighed the opportunity to deliver immediate, meaningful results for the people we serve. Democrats opposed the bill because they would rather wait for the opportunity to recklessly expand government spending if they gain the majority. Some Republicans opposed it because they believe a Republican governor could deliver a larger tax cut in the future.
I believe the best outcome for the people of Wisconsin was to get relief today, not asking people to wait and hope for relief next year. I am disappointed that the people of Wisconsin will suffer because politicians on both sides were unable to see this. This was politics at its worst. Even though this legislation failed, I remain committed to lowering costs for taxpayers, strengthening our schools, and delivering practical results for the people of Wisconsin.
